Michelle Redman artist Bio April 2024
I am a recent resident of Port Macquarie on Biripi Land, having relocated
from the Yarra Valley- Wurundjeri Land in Victoria. Looking for new beginnings
I moved away from my business of the last 17years to return a creative life
living by the ocean back in NSW.
I love to interact with the world through my hands; in dance, gardening,
cooking, communicating and sculpting. Sculpting, in particular, stirs my
passion to be creative and paper pulp is my medium.
Having used paper for sculpture over the last 30 years. The potential for
recycling paper-waste into art interested me from an environmental
perspective. Motherhood opened my eyes to the issues of the wellbeing our
oceans, forests, rivers and mountains and the accelerating destruction of our
Earth. I like to try and live with a gentle impact on the earth.
My art is organic in nature. Swirls, fluidity, watching nature’s unfurling
lines, chasing the perfect curve, diving into the mystery of circulating energy:
these are what I think about when formulating my sculptures.
I like to stimulate people’s curiosity; to evoke memories and
associations.
My recent travels to Morocco and Southern Europe, inspired an interest in
ancient vessels. Seeing ceramics of over 3,000 years old in the Aeolian
Islands, and the ornate chalices and urns in European churches and
museums, ideas developed to create vessels that bridge the gap between the
past and present.
I use a sustainable approach, crafting large, organic shapes from recycled
paper pulp moulded over op shop vases. Inspired by the earth tones
prevalent in Moroccan ceramics, The larger ornate vessels are coloured with
local rocks and dirt hand ground into earth pigments, giving each vessel a
natural hue.
The resulting pieces are a bit of a paradox. The lightness of the large, paper
pulp vessels creates a wonderful play on expectations, Lightness belying
strength: the vessels look as if they could be ephemeral but are built to last,
reinforcing paper pulp’s sturdiness.
