YEAR: 1977 film — 1981 Australian re-release poster
FILM STUDIO: Lucasfilm Ltd. / 20th Century Fox
DIRECTOR: George Lucas
CAST: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness
TAGLINE: “It’s Back!” / “The Force Will Be With You”
GENRE: Science Fiction / Adventure
POSTER PRINTER: M.A.P.S. Litho Pty. Ltd.
ARTWORK: Tom Jung — collector references identify this 1981 Australian Daybill as using Jung’s Star Wars artwork. Propstore
POSTER DESIGN FEATURES:
Original Australian Daybill for the 1981 theatrical re-release of Star Wars. The design uses a dramatic black background with the enormous white Star Wars logo dominating the centre, overlaid with the classic Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia heroic composition. A strong diagonal yellow band across the lower half carries the memorable “THE FORCE WILL BE WITH YOU” campaign line, while “IT’S BACK!” appears prominently across the top. The supplied example clearly shows the M.A.P.S. Litho Pty. Ltd. printer credit along the lower edge. Auction and collector records specifically identify this black-background/yellow-band design as the Australian 1981 re-release Daybill. LOT-ART
COLLECTOR’S NOTES:
This is an important distinction for cataloguing: it is not the 1977 Australian first-release Daybill, but an original Australian poster produced for the 1981 re-release. The “IT’S BACK!” headline and yellow “THE FORCE WILL BE WITH YOU” band are key identifiers for this campaign. LOT-ART
For collectors, it still has very strong appeal because it combines Tom Jung imagery, the original 1977 principal cast, classic Star Wars branding and an Australian-specific re-release layout. M.A.P.S. Litho was one of the major Australian cinema-poster printers of the era, and its printer mark is also useful in authenticating the poster as an original theatrical Australian issue rather than a later decorative reproduction. PROVENANCE:
This original Australian cinema poster is being sold directly by the family of its original collector, a projectionist who screened films during their Australian theatrical release. It is supplied with documented provenance and a Certificate of Authenticity confirming its originality and collection history, providing a direct connection between the poster and its working Australian cinema past.
