YEAR: 1978
FILM STUDIO: Walt Disney Productions
DIRECTOR: Norman Tokar
CAST: Ken Berry, Sandy Duncan, Harry Morgan, Roddy McDowall, McLean Stevenson, Ronnie Schell
TAGLINE: “A Close Encounter of the ‘Furred’ Kind!”
GENRE: Science Fiction / Comedy — the film is widely catalogued as a science-fiction comedy; AFI places it within children’s works, while Disney describes it as an off-beat extraterrestrial comedy. D23
POSTER PRINTER: M.A.P.S. Litho Pty. Ltd.
POSTER DESIGN FEATURES:
Original Australian first-release Daybill with a bright blue, white and yellow design centred on Jake, the extraterrestrial cat, beneath a hovering flying saucer. The title is angled dramatically through the spacecraft’s beam, with the large headline “A Close Encounter of the ‘Furred’ Kind!” clearly parodying the contemporary popularity of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The lower section uses clean blue typography for the cast and production credits, with the M.A.P.S. Litho Pty. Ltd. printer credit visible at lower left. Australian collector references identify this design as a 1978 Australian first-release Daybill. All About Movies
COLLECTOR’S NOTES:
The Cat from Outer Space follows an extraterrestrial feline named Jake, whose spacecraft crash-lands on Earth, forcing him to recruit human scientists to help repair it before the military and other interested parties take control. Disney records the principal cast as Ken Berry, Sandy Duncan, Harry Morgan, Roddy McDowall and McLean Stevenson. D23
A fun production detail is that Jake was played by two Abyssinian cats, Rumple and Amber, while Ronnie Schell supplied Jake’s voice. Disney selected the Abyssinian breed because producers felt it had a suitably “alien” appearance. D23
For collectors, this one has particularly nice crossover appeal across Disney, science fiction, cat-themed memorabilia and 1970s family cinema. Australian collector references also describe this Daybill as rarely seen, which is worth remembering when we come back to valuation. All About Movies
PROVENANCE:
This original Australian cinema poster is being sold directly by the family of its original collector, a projectionist who screened films during their Australian theatrical release. It is supplied with documented provenance and a Certificate of Authenticity confirming its originality and collection history, providing a direct connection between the poster and its working Australian cinema past.
