Then there’s the wall itself, the one you walk past every day, thinking, “I really should do something with that.”

Welcome to our November edition of At Sunset: a monthly look at framing, art for your walls and the spaces where creativity brings people together. We’ll share practical advice, things worth exploring and a few ideas you can make your own.

This month, we’re starting with what you already love, looking at wall art with a story, and opening the conversation about creative plans for 2027.

From the Framing Bench | Start with the piece, then the frame

“What frame should I choose?” is a very reasonable question. But there are a few things we like to understand first.

What are we framing? What does it mean to you? Where will it live? And what would you like to spend?

Original artwork by Heidi Lustig custom framed with a white mat and ornate black decorative frame at Sunset Framing & Gallery, Port Macquarie.Heidi Lustig Original Artwork | Ornate Custom Framing Port MacquarieSometimes the contrast between the artwork and the frame is exactly what makes the whole piece work. This original artwork by Heidi Lustig is delicate and contemporary, with fine detail, soft tones and flashes of bright colour. Rather than keeping the framing equally understated, we went in the opposite direction — an ornate black frame with layers of decorative detail creates a strong, dramatic boundary around the work. The generous white mat gives the artwork breathing room between the image and the heavier frame, allowing both elements to have their own presence.A great example of how custom framing doesn’t always have to quietly disappear. Sometimes the frame gets to be part of the personality too.Custom framed by Sunset Framing & Gallery, Port Macquarie. The warm timber picks up the natural colours within the painting without competing with its detail, while the simple contemporary profile keeps the overall presentation light and organic.Canvas float framing is a great option for original paintings and stretched canvases when you want to give the artwork a finished, gallery-style presentation while still allowing the edges and character of the canvas to remain part of the piece.Custom canvas and artwork framing by Sunset Framing & Gallery, Port Macquarie. A family photograph, an original artwork and a signed jersey each bring different considerations. The design matters, but so do the materials, the way the piece is supported and how it will be displayed.

If you’re planning a visit, bring the piece along where practical. A photograph of the room can also help us understand the colours, furniture and space around it. You don’t need to arrive with all the answers — working through the options together is part of what we do.

Something to try: look at the piece before looking around the room. Which colours or details do you want to bring forward? That gives us a useful starting point for choosing a frame and matboard that let it shine.

Explore our custom picture framing and see finished examples.

The specialist corner: jerseys, keepsakes and the bigger pieces

Some things need a little more planning than a standard print.

With a jersey or memorabilia display, think about the story you want to see. Is the signature the important detail? The team colours? Would a photograph or medal help explain the moment? Gathering the related pieces before your consultation helps us consider the layout as a whole.

Scott leads our memorabilia framing, and the conversation starts with the item and what matters to you. From there, we can discuss the presentation and suitable mounting options.

For a large artwork, think beyond the finished frame to the journey onto the wall. Measurements, doorways, transport and the intended hanging location all deserve a look before the project gets underway. If moving the piece is the difficult part, contact us first so we can discuss the options.

A Question We Hear | “Can I see what it might look like first?”

Yes — and you can start from home.

Our Virtual Framing Tool lets you upload an image and explore different frame and matboard combinations. It’s useful when you like a piece but can’t quite picture the finished result.

Try two or three combinations rather than feeling you need to test everything. A simple frame, a warmer timber tone and a more contrasting option can help you work out what you’re drawn to.

These three framing mock-ups were created using our Virtual Framing Tool — the same artwork, with three different ways to bring it to life.

The preview is a guide: screen colours and proportions can differ from the finished piece. Once you have a direction you like, send through your preferred design using the quote request. We’ll review it with you, confirm the details and discuss pricing. Sending a request starts that conversation; it doesn’t place an order.

Try the Virtual Framing Tool and send us your favourite option.

On the Wall | Choose something you’ll enjoy living with

A good starting point for wall art is surprisingly personal: what makes you stop and look?

It might be a landscape that reminds you of somewhere, an original painting with a colour you keep coming back to, or a film poster that brings a whole evening rushing back.

Room mock-up showing a black-framed photographic artwork with white matboard above a dark sofa in a neutral living room.Art That Feels at HomeChoose a piece you connect with, then give it a place in your everyday life.

Choose an artwork you enjoy spending time with, and give it a place where you can appreciate it every day.

Before choosing, measure the available wall area and consider the furniture below it. Marking out a possible size with removable paper can help you judge the scale. Check that anything you use is suitable for your wall finish first.

If you’re browsing original art or prints, make a small shortlist. Ask yourself which piece you would still be pleased to see on an ordinary Tuesday. You’re choosing something to live with, so that everyday connection is worth paying attention to.

A favourite photograph, thoughtfully framed, can bring colour and a personal connection to a space you pass through every day.

Browse our art and photography, and if something catches your eye, ask us about its size, availability and framing possibilities.

This month’s discovery: movie and music posters

Posters can be a lovely meeting point between art, memory and personality. A favourite film, a band you grew up with or an event you remember can give a room a story without needing much explanation.

Our movie and music poster collections offer plenty of starting points. You might browse for a particular title or artist, or simply follow the artwork and see what catches your attention.

This room mock-up shows how a collection of vintage movie posters can work together, with matching frames bringing very different films into one colourful display.

When considering a vintage poster, look beyond the title. Check the individual description and photographs, ask about condition, and confirm availability. Older paper can carry signs of its history, and it helps to understand the particular piece before choosing it.

A small wall update: think about the frame early

For a smaller print or photograph, a ready-made frame may be a practical option. Before buying, check the actual image opening as well as the frame size, especially if a matboard is included. An A4 sheet and an A4 image opening aren’t always the same setup.

If you have a print in mind, ask us about our current ready-made frames and whether one will suit. For pieces that need a particular fit or more considered protection, we can talk through custom framing too.

Ask us about ready-made frames and your print size.

Room to Create | Could 2027 be the year you share your idea?

Perhaps you’ve been thinking about teaching a workshop, bringing a creative group together or showing a small collection of your work.

November is a useful time to start that conversation, while the idea still has room to take shape.

We’re looking towards more creative activity in our spaces in 2027, and we’d love to hear from artists, facilitators and community groups with something they’d like to explore.

This image shows a class set up by Stu Doherty
You don’t need a polished proposal. A short outline is enough to begin: what would you like to do, who would it be for, roughly how many people might attend, and what would you need from the space? Tables, materials, access requirements, setup time and preferred dates all help us work out whether the idea is a good fit.

Talk to Cherie about a creative space or event idea.

For artists, our hireable exhibition wall offers another way to share your work. A small, connected selection can be a manageable starting point: consider the theme, how the pieces work together and what you would like visitors to understand about them.

Find out about exhibiting on our Artist Feature Wall.

One Small Thing This Month | Choose the piece that’s been waiting

You don’t need to finish a whole room to make a start.

Choose one photograph, artwork, poster or keepsake that you would enjoy seeing more often. Measure it, take a photo of the wall you have in mind, and have a browse through some framing ideas.

And if you’re planning something as a gift, get in touch early to discuss the work involved and current turnaround times before making plans around a particular date.

You’ll find us at 2/25 Central Road, Port Macquarie. Bring your piece, your questions or the beginnings of an idea — we’re happy to help you work out the next step.

Get in touch with Sunset Framing & Gallery.

What’s been waiting for its turn on your wall? We’d love to hear the story.

— Scott & Cherie
